The Teaching in Japan Page Sponsorship Information
Welcome to the Teaching in Japan Page
- History
The Teaching in Japan Page was posted to the web in June 1999 by a small group of college teachers who were working in Kawasaki, Japan at the time. We posted the page as a response to many of the questions which we had repeatedly answered in several web-based EFL/Japan-related discussion forums. Our primary purpose was to provide reasonably unbiased information to those interested in teaching in Japan. Our first page was created and posted using Geocities, a free website provider. When the page started, it consisted of one page with answers to the most frequently asked questions (FAQs), which we had noticed on the various discussion boards. During the next year and a half, we slowly added original content to our page, and began to get a good deal of feedback from our visitors. We have tried to adhere to the principle that our visitors appreciate original content rather than a simple "list" of links to other sites; therefore, we have taken a good deal of time building the site slowly and listening to the comments of our visitors. At present, we have around twenty pages of information relating to teaching in Japan within our site, and we do provide a limited number of links to the types of sites our visitors have recommeneded as being particularly useful. We still adhere to the principle that our visitors want relevant, reasonably unbiased information about teaching and living in Japan; thus, we continue to slowly develop new, original content.
- Site Promotion
Rather than trying to promote our site across the web using automated programs and web-based promotion services, we have written email to hundreds of website administrators whose sites are directly related to teaching/living in Japan, or to Teaching English as a Foreign Language. To date, we have been linked to over 100 sites directly related to TEFL or living/teaching in Japan, and we have received hits from over 270 different referers.
We have also had our site listed in the appropriate categories on all of the major search indexes/engines including Yahoo, Google, MSN, and others. Currently, we receive around half of our traffic from Yahoo, Google and MSN. The keywords most frequently used by those who visit our site via the Search Engines/ Directories are "teaching in Japan" and "teaching English in Japan."
- Site Administration
We have recently moved to a new server which has improved both our editing capacity and the load time of our pages. Our site is produced using basic HTML, rather than a WYSIG editor as we believe the dictum that "less is more" when focusing our site on text-based content. Finally, our site is produced and edited using a Mac Power PC; therefore, we ask that any code submitted to us for consideration is sent in Mac format, preferably on CD.
- Sponsorhip Information>
While we do not wish to "fill up" our site with banner advertising, at this time, we are ready to accept single sponsorship proposals for each of our pages. We envision having only one sponsor represented on a single page within our site. Obviously, the "home page" is the most desirable location to place an ad as this is the page which visitors use to enter our site; thus, it is the most often accessed page within the site. Following the index page in popularity are the Japan Job Links Page; The Language School Question and Answer Section; The Teaching in Japan Site Guide and The Teaching in Japan Quiz pages.
